Kapalı Maraş, also known as Varoşa, is a fenced-off area in the city of Gazimağusa in Kuzey Kıbrıs. This area was abandoned in 1974 following the Turkish intervention in Kıbrıs and has remained sealed off and uninhabited ever since. Before the evacuation, Varoşa was one of the Mediterranean's most popular tourist destinations, featuring luxury hotels, restaurants, and numerous shops. In recent years, parts of Kapalı Maraş have been reopened to the public. Visiting this area is like stepping back in time, as the buildings and streets remain almost exactly as they were left during the evacuation. However, many of the structures have suffered damage due to the passage of time and lack of maintenance. A visit to Kapalı Maraş offers a unique opportunity to witness a living history of a deserted area that still bears the marks and memories of its once-glorious past.
